Student Council

What is Student Council?

Student Council is a representative structure for all the students in the school. It provides students with the opportunity to be in partnership with school administration, teachers and parents. It should always work for the benefit of the school and its students.

Responsibilities of the Student Council:

  • Working with the school administration, teachers and parents

  • Communicating with all of the students in the school

  • Identifying issues of concern to students

  • Involving as many students as possible in the activities of the Council

  • Planning and managing the Council’s program of activities for the year

  • Managing and accounting any funds raised by the Council

Student Council Activities/Responsibilities:

  • Anti-Bullying Campaign

  • Create a Student Council Notice Board to encourage students to give suggestions and ideas for the Student Council to work on

  • Recycling and Green Team involvement

  • Organizing lunchtime activities

  • Creating a mentoring program

  • Fund-raising

  • Carrying out student surveys and questionnaires on issues and reporting back to the Council

  • Yearbook Committee

  • Newsletter

  • Student Awards and Honors

Student Council Officers and Responsibilities

President

  • Chief spokesperson and officer of the Student Council

  • Is a member of the Woodlake PTSA

  • Attends PTSA Executive Board Meetings and general monthly PTSA meetings

  • Chairs meetings in a fair manner ensuring that all have equal say

  • Has the casting vote if voting is divided equally

  • Signs any letters, notices etc. that are issued by the Student Council

  • Ensures that the Student Council is run effectively and efficiently

  • Prepares the agenda for each meeting

  • Signs the minutes from the previous meeting with the Secretary

Vice President

  • Takes over the responsibilities of the President when he/she is not available

  • Assists the President in the organization of the Student Council

  • Accompanies the President to meetings when necessary

Secretary

  • Takes minutes at the meetings and writes them up

  • Distributes the minutes the day before the set meeting so all Council Officers can read them and be prepared to vote on them

  • Ensures that everyone is aware that meetings are being held 

Treasurer

  • Manages any funds raised by the Student Council

  • Keeps financial records in order and reports to the Student Council on the current financial status of the group

  • Makes a brief financial report at the Council meeting
